Climbing Towards Your Dreams & Passions

What are you climbing towards? What are the mountain peaks and valleys of your life?
I was starting to write this blog about passions and dreams and I realized 2 songs that have inspired me (one since I was a child, and one from about 13 years ago) both refer to mountains and dreams and journeys.
Here are the lyrics from the more recent one:
“I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming, but
There's a voice inside my head saying
"You'll never reach it"
Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels lost with no direction
My faith is shaken
But I, I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high
There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It’s the CLIMB”
These are words that stick with me, even if it’s from a Disney teen Hannah Montana movie, sung by Miley Cyrus! You don’t have to be a Hannah Montana fan to appreciate this song and its lyrics!
Why do I find this inspirational, and what can we all take away from it?
What are the mountains in your life, what are you wanting to climb towards?
So often we focus on the end result, what “peak” we want to reach, that we don’t appreciate where we are at this exact moment; where we are on the climb.
At the same time, we are always worried about falling on the climb, or failing in our journey towards our goals. Guess what? It’s ok to fall and fail. As a matter of fact, you don’t really fail, you just stumble, pick yourself up and learn from it. Then the next time, choose a different path up that mountain, etc.
If your dream on that mountain peak is something you are passionate about, something you feel a calling for, something you know you are meant to do/achieve, then you will do everything it takes to reach it, and learn to enjoy the journey.
The second, and older song is from the musical, The Sound Of Music. You guessed it, it’s “Climb Every Mountain” by Rogers & Hammerstein. Here are the lyrics:
“Climb every mountain, search high and low
Follow every by way, every path you know
Climb every mountain, ford every stream
Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream
A dream that will need, all the love you can give
Everyday of your life, for as long as you live
Climb every mountain, ford every stream
Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream”
Again, Why do I find this inspirational, and what can we all take away from it?
It’s all about passion and perseverance to do whatever it takes to reach your dreams. When it talks about needing ”all the love you can give”, that’s your passion for loving what you are striving for.
In the movie, the Mother Superior is telling Maria that she shouldn’t do something because it was a dream she thought she wanted, she was saying she has to go out and reach for the dream that she really wanted deep down, her passion. (Granted this is talking about love and personal life, but it relates to your work and really anything you have going on in your life.)
How do you find your passion in your work life? Here is a formula that my friend, business coach and mentor, Hope Celeste Howland created to help you find your passion.
LOVE -
Write down what you LOVE and makes you come ALIVE, and you wish you
could do more of it and makes you feel the best! I.e.... Art, Cooking, Coaching, Public
Speaking.
TIME -
List the approx amount of time (years & months) you’ve been doing those
things your love. I.e... Art=15 years, Cooking= 25 years Coaching= 20 years, Public Speaking= 40 years
VALUE -
Write out things that you value, non-tangible things. I.e... generosity,
freedom, personal growth, service, integrity, helping others, joy, peace...
HOW -
Now write down a hard season. Answer the question of how you overcame
it?
Take the step 1-4 and follow this equation, to arrive at your Passion.
LOVE+ TIME+ VALUE+ THE HOW+ LOVE= (for example)
This formula can help you pinpoint what and where you should be “climbing”! It helped me to start my Positivity Growth Coaching business and my new Growth Project Membership, because I found that my passion is helping direct sales professionals grow to the next level in their business and reach their dreams by training, coaching and speaking.
